The reading above comes from BOM's real-time weekly IOD index (GAMSSA-based). It is used here only
because NOAA PSL's HadISST1.1 series (the chart below) has not published a value past
May 2026. The two products use the same
west/east box definition but different underlying sea surface temperature analyses. Comparing their
overlap from 2008 to 2025 shows a mean difference near zero, with a typical month-to-month spread of
about ±0.3°C (r = 0.78). Treat the current reading as a close approximation of the
historical series below, rather than a direct continuation of it.
